Michal Menet Breakdown
An offense can only go as far as their offensive line takes them. A good offensive line can dominate a game, while a bad line can lose one. Penn State returns a veteran offensive line in 2020, and it all starts at center.
Michal Menet turned down a chance to enter the NFL Draft, and gives the Nittany Lions leadership at a key position. His teammates and coaches both commend his work ethic on and off the field. They notice him watching film with coaches and by himself, and that effort translates onto the field. While Sean Clifford was getting a hold of the offense, Menet helped him point out keys and reads for certain plays. Now, they communicate with each other to get everyone in the correct position to be successful.
Menet’s currently a better run blocker than he is a pass blocker, but he doesn’t struggle blocking pass rushers. Given that rushers can get a jump on him since he’s focused on the snap first, Menet tends to lose some ground early on in the pass rush. Luckily, he’s able to reset his base with quick feet and by dipping his hips to help recover from a defender that gets leverage on him quickly. He’s not the most powerful guy, so technique becomes essential. Along with his pre-snap reads, Menet’s vision during plays is a valuable asset to the line. He’s quick to assess twists and stunts, and knows how to respond quickly. His brains able to process information quickly, which helps him determine who he will block even before the play begins, and helps him adapt if he misreads anything before the snap.
Michal Menet’s return to Penn State gives the Nittany Lions a great player and leader who can be a dominating player in the run game. With Journey Brown at running back and Clifford as a potential running threat, having that type of player up front makes the run game a formidable threat.
