Trey Hill Breakdown
Georgia’s offensive line only needed to replace one player heading into last year, but it came at a key position. Veteran Lamont Galliard moved on to the NFL, and an experienced offensive line was in need of a center. Trey Hill already had experience at guard and center, and wasted no time winning the starting spot. Entering the 2020 season, he’ll be the leader in a group that must replace four contributors.
Hill already had the experience of playing in the SEC, so it just came down to becoming more consistent and working on his craft as a center. Last year, he learned how to identify certain keys in a defense and worked with Jake Fromm to change protection if needed. He sees things during the play that help him pass off defenders to his other lineman, and it helps him pick up any twists or blitzes. He’s always had the physical tools to play, but it just came down to learning the extra aspects of the position.
He might not always get the best positioning on the man he’s blocking, but he constantly worked to get better leverage. Before he engages with a defender, he quickly sinks his hips to get lower than them. Even if he gets beat, he knows that he needs to reset his hips, so he’ll throw a punch, lower his pad level and reengage. He has the awareness to know when he needs to adjust, but sometimes he simply can’t. If a bull rush gets underneath him, he gets blown back without time to recover. Most of the time it comes in pass protection, and he hasn’t yet learned how to adjust to that.
Georgia’s looking at a playoff appearance in 2020, and Hill will need to bring the others up to speed. With a full year of experience at center, he’ll be the leader of the line. He’s powerful enough to take on strong defenders, and can add speed in the offseason to give the Bulldogs offense more versatility.
