Drew Dalman Breakdown
David Shaw sometimes mistakes his current starting center for his former teammate. It’s hard not to blame him given the history he has with their family. Drew Dalman, son of Shaw’s Stanford teammate Chris, has many of the same mannerisms as his dad. He’s already following in his father’s footsteps towards a successful career, and he’s hoping it’s one that also turns into an NFL career.
Sitting behind Jesse Burkett, Dalman learned how to become a Cardinal lineman and got time to grow and develop. He can still add size to his frame, but he still provided consistent play for Stanford in his first full season as a starter. While he still needs to add weight, Dalman’s anchor rivals that of someone larger than him. He refuses to get blown back thanks to his strong legs and the power he generates from them. As long as he’s not taken by surprise, he’s going to win his matchup. At times he will catch blocks and struggles to recover, but that has more to do with his size than anything. Imagine what he can do if he adds 20 pounds.
Everywhere Dalman finds success, it stems from his attention to detail. A strong base combined with great hip drive and a strong grip give him a chance to dominate any defender. It seems that once he gets his footing, he latches on to his man and it’s nearly impossible for them to escape his hold. As long as his guy is within reach, he’ll thrive. His angles to second level defenders are erratic and he struggles adjusting when the divert off of his path.
Drew Dalman’s elevated his game to become one of the best centers in the country. Adding more size to his frame will complement his current skillset to make him even better. Stanford’s line used to be a dominant force, and guys like Dalman are bring the Cardinal back to those times.
