Connor Olson Breakdown
Depth at offensive line is always an essential key to a team’s success, and building that in any way helps. If you have a guy that can play multiple positions, that makes life even easier. Connor Olson‘s willingness to help his team get better provided him with opportunities to play multiple positions, and allowed the Gophers to move him around the line when injuries plagued the team throughout 2019.
He can play both center and guard, and he doesn’t have a preference for one position over the other. Olson started nine games at center and three games at left guard this year, but also took snaps at right guard. Minnesota knows they have a reliable player when he hits the field, and his play doesn’t suffer when he makes a position change.
Not only will he play wherever the coaches ask, but he’ll compete his tail off for his team. That’s evident in every rep he takes too. There were times where he lost leverage initially but he continued to utilized punches to reset himself. He’s not going to overpower anyone with his strength, but he’s still able to use his quickness to gain leverage on a defender and turn their shoulders away from the play.
At both center and guard, Olson’s good at getting out in space as well as reaching a defender that’s in the gap next to him. When out in space, he’s constantly looking for the closest threat to the ball carrier, and makes quick decisions about who to block and when to drop his hips and get into position to make a block.
Connor Olson’s a player you want on your team. He’s willing to play any position, and he’s a competitor who will find ways to be successful anywhere. He’ll battle against anyone, as we saw against Auburn’s Derrick Brown, and hold his own. Just by having him on roster, he adds depth to a position group that always needs more
