Trey Sermon Breakdown
As if Ohio State needed more talent on their roster, they added a player that keeps them in the running for the national championship. With the departure of J.K. Dobbins, the Buckeyes needed a running back. Enter Trey Sermon. The former Oklahoma Sooner needed a fresh start, and his transfer to Columbus gives him a chance to be the featured back.
Physical is the best way to describe Sermon’s game. He welcomes contact, and isn’t afraid to pod his pads against any competition. That’s not to say that he doesn’t implement speed into his arsenal, but he’s going to win by being physical. Running the ball, Sermon’s not going down on first contact. His leg drive and strength keep him going and help him fall forward when he gets taken down. As a blocker, he can square up any rusher and stun them where they stand. Even if he’s out of position, he has shown that he’s willing to lay his body out so that another runner can break free or his quarterback can get more time to throw. He plays the game with a physical mentality, and his new teammates will love that.
How will Sermon fit into his new offense? That remains the biggest concern for his game right now. Finding a complement to Sermon’s physical style could also be something to note for this year. He’s not going to be a guy that creates space with his speed and agility, but he’ll stiff arm a tackler or run them over without thinking twice. That physical style comes with some finesse, too.
Sermon welcomes contact, but doesn’t go out of his way to find it. He can be a patient runner who identifies the best opening, and then let his physicality take over from there. Ohio State needed a running back who can be a star, and Sermon gives them that. There will be competition at the position, but Sermon brings experience that the other candidates don’t, giving him an edge. He’s a physical runner who can help Ohio State get back to the playoff, and appears poised for his best season yet.
