LSU’s Joe Burrow performed one of the biggest turnarounds by a college football player, maybe ever. Lost in that attention was the improvement that Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan made in the same time period. Minnesota put together one of the best season’s in school history, and their quarterback led the charge.
Quarterback’s been a position that the Gophers lacked consistency, and no one expected that to change the way it did last year. Morgan won a competition with Zack Annexstad, and his competitive nature has helped him make changes to his game and make the Gophers a threat in the Big Ten. Morgan’s worked with a number of coaches outside of campus that have helped him become a better passer.
His arm strength might not be elite, but he’s worked on his mechanics to utilize his hips and core more to get the ball out faster. He’s a smart player capable of making good decisions with the football thanks to his preparation.
No one will work harder than Morgan when it comes to preparing for a game. His ability to diagnose and discover tendencies from the defenses he faced made him a dangerous threat. That comes from his fierce, competitive personality. He refuses to lose, and his teammates love that about him. His humility might be his best trait that no one sees. Morgan takes care of the guys protecting him, often dropping off cookies to their houses when they don’t expect it. When he makes a great throw or a big play, he’s quick to give another player the credit.
Winning over a locker room is an important part of being the starting quarterback, and Morgan went to work right away in that regard. Minnesota and Morgan didn’t receive enough credit for the success they had last year, but both are set to continue the success in the future, and the Gophers offense will be tough to stop once again in 2020.
